Photo: Universal Whisky Experience
Las Vegas is fast becoming a great town for whiskey lovers. A prime example is the Universal Whisky Experience, an annual event that's returning this weekend to the Wynn and Wynn Encore.
The four-day celebration of the spirit climaxes with the Nth Show grand tasting on Friday night, April 7, inside the Beethoven Ballroom at 6:30 p.m. The evening is an intimate experience with attendance capped at 300 people, to sample from 250-300 whiskies representing about 130 brands.
For big spenders, a High Roller ticket runs $2,995 and includes not only VIP access to the Nth Show, but also entry to a series of additional events, including a Super Pours tasting of rare whiskies and a unique Whiskey Speed Dating event (both on Thursday night). Other highlights include a sold-out dinner Wednesday night at Joel Robuchon and a seminar Saturday with master distiller Richard Paterson.
But the love of whiskey doesn't stop there. Check out a few more places in Las Vegas dedicated to the spirit.
The restaurant at the Venetian is best known for the Creole touch given to its steaks, inspired by founder Emeril Lagasse. But it also has one of the very best whiskey collections in not just Las Vegas, but the entire country. The list is more than 40 pages with at least 700 spirits from nine countries.
Featuring a massive collection curated by a UNLV professor over 20 years, samples are offered by appointment only. It's an educational experience and a dream come true for any true connoisseur.
The restaurant at the Grand Canal Shoppes is already known for its sake collection and blending both South American and Asian cuisine on its menu, but it's been slowing growing its Japanese whisky collection for years. Samples are paired carefully with inventive dishes.
Ri Ra Irish Pub
This bar inside the Shoppes at Mandalay Place was imported and recreated, piece by piece, from a historic pub in Ireland. It offers nearly 50 unique selections from its home country like Bushmills, Jameson, Midleton, Cooley, Tullamore, Knappogue, Walsh and Teeling. If whiskey isn't your thing, just ask for a Guinness poured "the right way" from the tap.
